February 28, 2020

This week:

Room 5 has begun our research project involving waste in our world.  Each student has chosen a product that they use regularly in their lives.  We are focusing on documenting the materials used, environmental advantages and disadvantages, consumer advantages and disadvantages as well as alternatives to be able to see the impact of each product on the environment.  We will share our learnings with each other and the school community.

We continued to build on our knowledge of photography with Ms. Sarah.  Pictures below show the ways we practiced bird's eye view, ant's eye view, symmetry and the rule of thirds.
We've enjoyed playing floor hockey this week.  Many of us are very passionate about team sports!

February 25, 2020

This morning we attended 2 different presentations in the iLab.  The first was with Green Calgary.  We started with planning and building our own mini landfill using the materials we had.  Our goal was to create a landfill that would not allow the leachate to contaminate the ground water in our model.  Many of us designed successful models.  We then learned about the components used in Calgary landfills and how similar our models were to actual designs.

Our second presentation was with our Artist in Residence, Ms. Sarah.  She taught us about what a camera must have:  a shutter and an aperture.  We also learned that you can't take a picture without light.  We did an experiment where we exposed our eyes to different levels of light and we were able to see how our pupils changed with the amount of light in the room.  At the end we got to test our knowledge with a demonstration using props.

Reminder:  Tomorrow is pink shirt day.

Today in math we did each got the opportunity to practice addition, subtraction or estimation to prepare for our check-in tomorrow.  Ask me what I chose to work on.

We continued belts in music.  We demonstrated our cooperation, team-work and active participation during floor hockey.  In writing, we discussed the power of kindness and have begun writing special notes to important people in our school.  In social we finished sharing our knowledge of the forestry industry in a concept map.  Our science learning involved examining the ways different products are packaged and the advantages and disadvantages of the packaging materials.

Reminders:  Green Calgary will be visiting us tomorrow.  Students have the option to come into the school a few minutes early in the morning.  Ask your child about this.

💝 Happy Valentine's Day from room 5! 💘

This week students have been writing about people they love, times they've felt most loved and even whether or not they believe animals feel love.  We also wrote some poetry using rhyme, shapes and acrostics.

This afternoon we had a gallery walk presentation where we were able to visit room 4 and view the Beakerhead art/inventions and share what our class created as well.  Some of our greatest take-aways were:

  • It was cool to see lots of different ideas (KK)
  • People had different ideas that I never thought of (SM)
  • The kids in room 4 worked alone and our class did it in groups (SD)
  • There were different ideas in both classrooms (AV)
  • Everyone figured out a way to include elastic bands in their inventions (MH)
We ended the day with our valentine card exchange.  Students will bring home cards and treats today.

Buddies, Beakerhead and beautiful works of art!  That's how students in room 5 spent the morning.  Have a look at some of the amazing creations our class designed to show movement using elastic bands.  We wrote reflections about our artwork that discussed the ways we addressed background, middle ground, foreground, horizon line, depth and realism within our art inspired by gorgeous Alberta landscapes.

Reminder:  Field study forms for Fish Creek Park are due Monday.

Have a great weekend!
